The confinement rules in Singapore as well as in various other Asian countries have been passed over from one generation to the other but their validity is not confirmed until today. According to experts, certain rules should be followed by the new moms and some other which can be broken without any hitch. Some of the rules to be followed and likely to break are listed here under for your consideration.
Confinement rules to follow
Do not do household works
According to experts, women should take rest during confinement otherwise, later on, they will have to face several health problems. During pregnancy and labor, the body has suffered a lot. So, they are advised to take rest after the birth of their child. It will help in healing the wounds caused by C-section or episiotomy and return to its normal size as well as restore their overall health and replenish their entire body. But that does not mean that you should not do any work and lie down on the bed. If you do not do small routine chores then it can increase the risk of blood clotting and affected circulation in their legs.
Avoid carrying heavy items
During confinement, women are advised not to carry heavy items as it can be risky for your prolapsed and weak womb as it is not getting support from their weak pelvic floor muscles and ligaments. In worst cases, you can see your womb through the entrance of your vagina. After C-section, as per experts’ advice, not to carry loads at least for the first two months as it can increase the risk of tearing of the scarred tissues after surgery. In the meantime, you should leave such things for your husband to do.
Avoid eating grapefruits and cucumber
During pregnancy and after childbirth there are many restrictions about food. Food items have been categorized into five categories including cool, cold, hot, warm and neutral. According to experts, cool foods like citrus fruits and gourds should be avoided during confinement as they can worsen gastric and digestion problems. They stop the use of these foods during confinement even if there is no scientific proof in this regard. During this period women should exclude cool foods and take a well-balanced diet by including grapes, cherries, and apple due to their neutral properties.
Avoid taking iced drinks and chilled food
Taking chilled and frozen foods during confinement can be harmful to your digestion system and stomach. They can prolong discharge and reduce the ability of your body to get rid of lochia. However many doctors do not advice to avoid such foods as there is no scientific evidence in this regard. If you are still suspicious about this confinement rule then you can opt for eating and drinking lukewarm and well-cooked foods as it can help in getting rid of harmful germs.
Confinement rules you can break
Remain in the warm environment all the time
In the sunny environment of Singapore, it is not advised by the experts to remain consciously in a warm environment. But you should not be exposed to cold wind or air from air conditioner or fan as it can cause health problems. It can slow down the circulation of blood and energy in the body, muscles aches and stiffness in joints because during confinement immune system and constitution of the body becomes weaker. The home should be well ventilated and the temperature of your air conditioner should be set at 25 degrees or above.
Avoid drinking plain water
According to rule, drinking plain water can affect water retention power of the body. They suggest drinking ginger tea and red date tea only. Though these options can help in releasing wind but experts suggest avoiding too much use of these drinks as in hot months it can cause constipation.
Avoid washing your hair or taking a shower
Though rule makers have given this advice to avoid rheumatism and headaches for the rest of the life but experts have recommended to break this rule as it may not be possible to follow in the humid and hot environment of Singapore. Today new moms can take bath in warm water. When new moms are breastfeeding then it is necessary to focus on personal hygiene.
